Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media

My name is Juliette Davidia Hebert. I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in 2-Dimensional Studies. During my time in college I experimented in oil and acrylic painting, wax encaustic painting, several printmaking processes, drawing – and finally, in my senior year, I began work in mixed media.

Since graduation the majority of my work has been digital, though I use what I’ve learned from multiple disciplines in order to achieve the desired effect.

My work was once described as having an “endearing macabre” aesthetic- I loved this description so much that I use it for shorthand when describing what I do. I take inspiration from a variety of sources including graphic design, classic and modern children’s book illustration, as well as several painters including Remedios Varo and Giorgio De Chirico.

While my style leans toward bright colors, clean lines and an overall whimsical and childlike aspect, my subject matter is typically much darker. Much of my work has drawn on the experience of growing up in a home marred by depression, alcohol and drug abuse. It has also dealt with issues of identity, memory and generational trauma.

If asked what I intend to achieve with my work, I honestly don’t believe I’d be able to give a satisfactory answer. In general, though, my goal is to achieve beauty from chaos. It is my hope that one day my work will reach children and young adults that are going through the same things I once did. And hopefully, I can take the darker aspects of life and use them to shed some light on the lives of others.
