419 HISTORY DAY Plastics are everywhere, in so many items we use and handle daily. Steve Pollick, retired outdoors editor of The Blade, will explore this world of plastics and our role in it.

The first manmade plastic, bakelite, was developed just over a century ago, and it spawned a petrochemical explosion of materials that has come to dominate mankind’s life on Earth, both to its benefit and its detriment.

Plastics are everywhere, in so many items we use and handle daily, in the solid waste stream, along the roads as litter, and in the seas as a pervasive pollutant. Plastics even are incorporated into the tissues of our bodies, having entered the food-chain.

About the Presenter:

Steve Pollick, 70, is the retired outdoors editor of The Blade in Toledo, having closed out a 40-year career with the newspaper at the end of 2011. His many assignments over the years took him from his rural Sandusky County homestead on Muskellunge Creek across North and South America and on to remote corners of the world, always with nature, indigenous people, wildlife and wild places, and adventure in mind. His writings and photography won many state, regional, and national awards over the years, and in 1987 he was elected a fellow of The Explorers Club in New York City. He is the author of two award-winning books of nature essays, Reflections on a Summer Storm, and Starwalking with Sarah, and he is co-author with artist Jeff Basting of Best of the Outdoors Page, a collection of 63 of 170 monthly illustrated special Sunday pages the two of them produced over 15 years and which received best-in-show honors from the Ohio Chapter, Society of Professional Journalists, in 2012. Steve still travels widely and enjoys outdoors pursuits in retirement.
